In selecting a route the climber should be sure therope reaches the bottom or a place from which furtherrappels will reach the bottom.

The rappel point should be tested carefully forsoundness, and inspected to see that the rope will runaround it when one end is pulled from below.

If a sling rope must be used for a rappel point, itshould be tied double; if around a rock, it should sag alittle, rather than be taut. Use several loops of nylon orManila sling, keeping all loops of the same dimensions-Avoid parachute cord. If any lowering under tension iscontemplated, use a descending ring or sacrifice a cara-biner; running a climbing rope directly over slings willlead to disaster.
