The first man down should: (a) Choose a smoothroute for the rope, free of sharp rocks, (b) Place looserocks, which the rope might later dislodge, far enough backon ledges to be out of the way. Always use an upper belayfor all but the last person, who should be protected by alower belay if possible, (c) Prevent the doubled rope fromtwisting by placing the index finger of the braking handbetween the two ropes (see below), (d) See that the ropewill run freely around the rappel point when one end ispulled from below.

Each man down signals "Off rappel" (by pullingalternately on each end of the rope so that the rope runsacross the rappel point).
