Snow Formation and Avalanches : Page 217

Occasionally a rope may be used in crossing anarrow gully or small wind slab. One member of theparty crosses the dangerous portion while holding on toa rope which is being anchored by another member ofthe party who is on safe snow. Dangerous slopes shouldnever be crossed, however, by skiers tied together by arope, since they will become badly entangled if an avalanche occurs.

If the danger is from a light powder-snow avalanche, it is desirable to cover the mouth and nose witha cloth to avoid suffocation from the snow cloud whichalways accompanies such an avalanche.

It is important that mittens be worn in order toavoid frozen hands in the event of an avalanche.
